Why use this template?

Unless you have already built and orchestrated a sophisticated go-to-market technology stack, it’s hard to know which vendors to buy from.  I have made the mistake of picking the wrong vendor and it actually hindered our productivity as a team. It was very frustrating.

I developed this software evaluation template to serve as a simple rubric for conducting vendor evaluations.

I include my view of the go-to-market technology landscape and recommended vendors for categories within marketing, sales and customer success.

What's inside the template

This software evaluation template is broken down into the following sections. Once you download the template, familiarize yourself with each of the following tabs:

  • Go-to-Market Technology Landscape: my brief summary of the GTM technology landscape and recommended vendors.
  • Software Evaluation Template: a blank template for you to input your criteria and scores.
  • Example: a completed software evaluation for inspiration on how to fill in each cell.

How to use this template

Any time you need to identify the right software for your company and your team, you can use this template. This could be for sales software evaluations, marketing software evaluations or customer success software evaluations. Once you download the template, here are a few quick steps to get started:

  1. Write down the business case.
  2. Identify the top 3-5 vendors.
  3. Research their offering and contact their sales team.
  4. Fill out the software evaluation template as you go.
  5. Circulate with your team for discussion / buy-in.  
  6. Make the case to invest in the software.

Doing it this way, will actually help you move faster by increasing your likelihood of choosing the right vendor the first time.

It can be tempting to move forward with the first vendor you talk to, but I've found it's worth it to take the extra time to do an analysis of what else is out there.

Once you do the analysis though, don't wait around. Take action and have a real plan to get a return on your investment. Software doesn't magically grow your revenue. You still have to get it to work for you.
