As a first principle, you're better off focusing on how your company can best serve customers versus spending too much time on what your competitors are doing.

I've seen leaders constantly chasing the competition. Copying what they are doing. But always a few steps behind.

This is a trap.

Do competitive analysis to understand the competition and analyze them, but blaze your own trail.

This is how we analyzed the competitive landscape for our B2B SaaS vertical. And despite the fact that there were better products that were more capitalized than us, we were able to clearly articulate our unique position against them to win customers year after year.

It's a no brainer to use AI for these types of research tasks nowadays.

This is the step by step process to conduct competitor analysis (the same process AI goes through too):

1. Write down the 3-5 names of companies that sell similar software to you.
2. Look at each company and see what they are good at and what they are not so good at.
3. Understand how they are different from you, like who they sell to and what they charge.
4. See how they market their software and how customers feel about it.
5. Think about their strengths and weakness going into the future.

We'll conduct research like this to inform go-to-market strategies. We also us this sheet to train our marketing teams, so that the content we are producing remains uniquely differentiated against competitors.
