Why use this template?
When I was first promoted to Head of Sales at our B2B SaaS company, I discovered our sales compensation plans were largely determined by our finance team, not sales leadership.
This was a major problem. In my experience, finance professionals see numbers on a spreadsheet and forget that those numbers are a result of the people that put in the hard work every day.
Our sales compensation plans did not inspire our sales team to achieve outstanding results. The comp plans were unattainable and demotivating.
Less than 10% of the sales team was hitting quota. The top talent quit for better jobs, while the under-performers stuck around and lived off their base salary.
That's when I implemented this sales compensation plan template to fix these problems.

How to use this template
Getting sales compensation plans is a critical component to achieving sales revenue targets. Prior to moving into a sales leadership position, I had experienced great sales compensation plans where I made a ton of money as a sales rep and terrible plans that left me feeling defeated every month.
Here's how you can adapt this framework to incentivize the right behavior:
- Review all tabs in the spreadsheet first. It's always good to familiarize yourself with the content before you really dig in.
- Complete the Sales Compensation Plan Template. This will guide you through a series of questions to consider for designing your comp plan.
- Get feedback from your team on an initial comp plan. Then finalize once you achieve internal buy-in.
- Add your sales reps names to the spreadsheets and enter in the details of your sales compensation plan.
