Why use this template?

Mission driven organizations have more engaged employees, higher employee retention, better organizational alignment, the ability to attract top talent, differentiation in the market and stronger customer loyalty to name a few.

Admittedly, our B2B SaaS company lacked a compelling mission, vision and values.

It was more the market tailwinds and initial product market fit that enabled us to grow quickly ($2M to $18M ARR). But once competition flooded the market, our position wasn't defensible.

If we had a stronger mission and vision, paired with more experienced product leadership, the opportunity was there for us to grow to $100+ million in annual recurring revenue. I mean we had acquired every major high growth tech company as our customer. You name it: Snowflake, Yelp, Groupon, Uber, Stripe... the list goes on.

But it didn't last. We eventually lost our way. Rudderless, with an uninspiring mission, constantly changing vision, and aspirational values that employees didn't actually live day to day.

I'm sharing this framework, so you don't make the same mistakes as us.

How to use this template

Here's how I recommend you develop your mission, vision and values to achieve your company's full potential:

  1. Mission: Define your purpose and the fundamental reason your company exists. Identify the problems you aim to solve and the impact you aspire to make.
  2. Vision: Envision the future state you want your company to achieve. Create a compelling and inspiring picture of what success looks like.
  3. Values: Determine the core principles and beliefs that guide your company's behavior. Identify the qualities and characteristics you want your company to embody.
  4. Align stakeholders: Engage key stakeholders, including employees and leaders, in the process. Seek their input and ensure their alignment with the mission, vision, and values.
  5. Communicate and embed: Clearly communicate the mission, vision, and values to all stakeholders. Integrate them into your company's culture, decision-making, and practices.
